8. DECEMBER

Do you enjoy Christmas music?

It's nice, right? Unless, of course, they're being butchered in tinny synthetic sounds at the shopping centre, while you're making that last mad dash to get the turkey so you can thaw it in time for making Christmas dinner.

I love Christmas music (just not at the shops). I love hearing Christmas music from around the world, but there is something special about the songs I grew up with.

Arve Moen Bergset

Here’s one of my Norwegian favourites, Mitt hjerte alltid vanker (My heart wanders), sung by Arve Moen Bergset, in his crystal clear boy’s voice, and hearing this on a dark morning in December makes my neck hairs bristle.

It’s about how the heart wanders to the stable where Jesus was born and about how sparrows have their nests and the lion has its den but why didn’t God have anything but a borrowed crib in a stranger’s stable.

But you don’t have to know this to enjoy the haunting melody and beautiful voice.
